HONEXT® To Take Part in London Design Festival 2021

HONEXT® will be participating in two key events at this year’s London Design Festival (LDF), which will take place across the city from 18-26 September.

setembre 16, 2021

Built entirely with HONEXT® panels, the New Contracts exhibit will host a selection of works by MA Design Products graduates from the Royal College of Art (RCA).

Against a backdrop of an increasingly unstable political and economic landscape, the event explores different ways in which we might draw up new contracts with the world around us. In a series of talks, participating graduates and a number of key speakers are invited to address topics ranging from the relationship we have with the materials and resources we use, to the application of disruptive technologies in reshaping the physical world. While members of the public will not be able to attend these talks in person, the sessions will be live-stremead and re-played on loop in the window of 35-36 and 9a Thurloe Place for the duration of the London Design Festival.

On Saturday, 18 September at 1pm, HONEXT® brand manager Berta Julià and market manager Claudia Carrasco will be joining The Material Protocol panel discussion together with materials pioneer Chris Lefteri, founder of the world-leading design studio bridging the gap between the material industries and the design community, and a representative for Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) at the UK’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

“In keeping with the concept of doing things differently, we have designed an exhibition build that incorporates a number of ready-made, recyclable and easy to assemble elements. Our plan is to rent and return as much material as possible once the exhibition is taken down in order to reduce our carbon impact and wastage of resources. And this is the reason why we have partnered with HONEXT® and used its panels as the main building material for the exhibition.”

On Thursday, 23 September, HONEXT ® will be joining Planted at King’s Cross, the first zero-waste contemporary design event aimed at reconnecting people and spaces with nature.

Centred around a six-part talks programme exploring greening cities in a post pandemic world, the event will address critical issues like the future of waste and how to rewild our cities to halt the catastrophic loss of biodiversity and reverse the effects of climate change. The list of market-leading sustainable design brands that will be present include Benchmark, Another Country, Vestre, Naturalmat, Out of the Valley, Very Good & Proper, Form & Refine, Less is Better, Teer & Co, Nikari, and Woodnotes.

At 5:30pm, HONEXT® brand manager Berta Julià and market manager Claudia Carrasco will be chatting with biophilic design expert Oliver Heath, joining some of the most progressive thinkers from the worlds of design, sustainability, architecture, food production and nature.

How Construcía Turned to HONEXT® to Improve Wallbox’s Office Acoustics

We chat with a representative of Construcía to discuss how the circular construction company used HONEXT® to build acoustic islands that improve the office acoustics of electric car charger manufacturer Wallbox.

setembre 13, 2021

How did you use HONEXT® for this project?

We turned to HONEXT® to build acoustic islands that improved the acoustics of Wallbox’s offices, achieving healthy sound absorption with zero emissions and a look and feel that contributes to a pleasant work environment.

What made you consider HONEXT® for building these acoustic islands?

Following our proprietary Lean2Cradle® methodology, we needed suppliers and materials that would align with our circular philosophy and that would fall under the Cradle to Cradle certification, the only one in the world that evaluates materials based on their circularity and healthiness.

"HONEXT® panels are free of toxic additives and have the largest possible negative carbon footprint. They can serve as the perfect substitutes for the wood chipboards that are traditionally used in today’s construction industry."

Why this focus on healthy and circular construction materials?

Unbeknown to a large part of society, many of the products traditionally used in construction projects contain toxic materials and are full of carcinogenic, mutagenic, and endocrine disruptive substances. These end up negatively affecting the air quality of the spaces and generating a great impact on people’s health.

For us, it is essential to select healthy materials, without toxic substances that are harmful to people, and circular, capable of being reused in future cycles without losing value.

How does HONEXT® embody these characteristics? What made it the winning proposition?

HONEXT® perfectly matched the needs of our project and met all the requirements that we take into account for building a circular space. HONEXT® panels are free of toxic additives and have the largest possible negative carbon footprint. They are also fully circular products, as they are made of upcycled waste fibres from the paper industry. They can serve as the perfect substitutes for the wood chipboards that are traditionally used in today’s construction industry.

"We want buildings to be understood as material banks, as small urban mines, where the materials and products installed can be reinserted into a new cycle at the end of their useful life."

How are HONEXT® and Construcía aligned when it comes to values?

Our shared commitment to a circular economy makes us go in the same direction. At Construcía we are directly aware of the transformative change that the construction sector needs to undertake, and this prompts us to seek new paths to produce a positive impact on people, society and the environment. Innovation, evolution, constant improvement and sustainability are part of our DNA, and that is something we agree on with HONEXT®.

What have been the highlights of working with HONEXT®?

The main problem we find when we are going to carry out a circular project is that there are not enough circular and healthy construction solutions as they should, and the existing ones are often hard to work with and adapt to the project’s needs. HONEXT® not only met all the material requirements but was also able to provide ad hoc product development for the project.

It has been a learning process for both parties, and both the material and the team have surprised us very pleasantly. We actively worked together to address the different needs that arose throughout the project, looking for the ideal product for the proposed construction solutions.

Will you continue using HONEXT® in your future projects?

In our pursuit of a fully circular economy, we want to be able to build an ecosystem of transformers and recuperators, and we are sure that HONEXT® will be part of it. We want buildings to be understood as material banks, as small urban mines, where the materials and products installed can be reinserted into a new cycle at the end of their useful life.

Construction materials are heavily impacting our planet. Most building materials used today are not recyclable, causing each one of us to generate an average of 1.78 tons of construction waste every year.

At HONEXT® we have managed to turn cellulose residue that would otherwise end up in a landfill into a healthy alternative to traditional building materials that can be endlessly recycled. And that’s where you come in.

As an architect of the years to come, you are uniquely positioned to help us bring this innovation to real-world projects and spaces. Request your sample kit now to see how HONEXT® can help you build a better tomorrow, today.
