Can I transform my waste fibre into HONEXT®? How can I build a HONEXT® site?

We are currently looking for partners in the paper manufacturing and waste management sectors to build a globally distributed network of HONEXT® manufacturing plants that transform paper waste right where it is produced.

How can I recycle my old HONEXT® boards?

At this point, HONEXT® panels can only be recycled as part of our manufacturing process in our production plant in Vacarisses. We are working on a take-back programme for our collaborators to recycle their panels when these reach the end of their natural life.

Are HONEXT® panels recyclable?

HONEXT® is a circular production material that allows for 100%, infinite recycling. Once our material reaches its natural end after many years of use, the cycle starts again. We feed the material back into the process and generate a new set of HONEXT® panels.

We recommend working the material in a way that preserves that degree of recyclability.

What are the material’s technical properties and specifications?

HONEXT® panels are 100% recyclable and emissions-free and have excellent mechanical and thermodynamic properties.

Our panels do not not emit formaldehyde or other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and are Cradle to Cradle Silver Certified and Material Health Silver Certified.

HONEXT® has greater sound absorption properties than drywall and MDF, and is resistant to moisture and water vapor. Its current reaction to fire is class C-s1,d0, with Class B-s1,d0 expected to be reached by Q4 2021.

HONEXT® panels provide better thermal and sound insulation than other materials with similar applications, and it offers greater resistance to bending and is lighter than traditional partitioning materials.

Is HONEXT® Cradle to Cradle Certified®?

HONEXT® is Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Silver Certified, Material Health Silver Certified and GBCe Certified. Our ambition is to reach C2C Golden Certified in the next renewal of the certification.

Is HONEXT® emissions-free?

HONEXT® is entirely emissions-free. It does not emit formaldehyde or any other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) thanks to a unique, nature-inspired process that maximises the bonds between cellulose fibres.

Additionally, our production process is carbon neutral. We source our waste locally to eliminate the need for transportation, and our factory is designed to have zero environmental impact: gas and electricity are generated through waste digestion, and process water is kept in a closed loop, being permanently recycled.

Why is every HONEXT® panel unique?

As our raw material is 100% mixed waste, each HONEXT® panel is different and has a visually unique surface.

The colour of each batch of HONEXT® panels varies slightly within the range of light beige and grey tones depending on the waste used.

The panels sometimes display a set of water stains. These are formed during the material’s production process and come from the dyes contained in our raw materials. The intensity and shape of the stains vary from panel to panel.

The material can also contain traces of plastic coming from post-consumer paper waste and that cannot be eliminated in our process. This plastic melts due to the high temperatures in the drying process, causing darker spots of Ø1-10mm on the material. The surface may also display smaller coloured dots of Ø0,5-1mm caused by the inks present in our raw material. Other particles such as metals or unmelted plastic pieces can also be found.

The aesthetic heterogeneity of HONEXT® panels does not in any way affect the material’s mechanical properties or post-processing.

How are HONEXT® panels produced?

The manufacturing process of HONEXT® panels comprises four steps:

First, we analyse, sort, and classify the raw waste based on its composition to achieve a standard product. Based on the quality of the batch of waste, we add in more post-consumer cellulose fibres if necessary.

We then subject the mix to our signature, nature-inspired process, adding organic components to generate stronger bindings between the cellulose fibres with no need for resins.

Next, we add healthy, non-toxic additives to the now upcycled cellulose fibres. Once added, we compress and shape the material into a wet panel.

Finally, we feed the wet panel into a drying tunnel, letting the remaining water evaporate with the high airflow and temperature. HONEXT® is now ready for use.

The 100%-recyclable composition of HONEXT® panels allows us to reclaim them at the end of their natural life cycle and produce a new set of panels.

Where does the waste used to create our panels come from?

The waste fibres used to produce HONEXT® come from primary sludge waste from paper mills and post-consumer cardboard waste. Waste is sourced locally to eliminate the need for transport and related emissions.

Our first functional factory, which is integrated into a landfill in Vacarisses, Spain, is just the first step in a future global network of modular production facilities located right where waste is produced.

HONEXT® panels are made of upcycled waste fibres from paper mill primary sludge and post-consumer cardboard waste – all mixed with non-toxic additives in an innovative, nature-inspired process.

What is HONEXT®?

HONEXT® is an innovative Barcelona-based company that manufactures a carbon-neutral, circular, biotech process that upcycles waste fibres into fully recyclable and non-toxic panels for construction applications.

Established in 2011 by co-founders Pere and Pol Merino, HONEXT® is based on a research project from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. After 10 years of development, HONEXT® panels are manufactured at no cost to the planet at the company’s first functional factory, integrated into a landfill in Vacarisses, Spain.

Through a proprietary and proven manufacturing process, HONEXT® has managed to turn waste fibres that would otherwise end up in a landfill into a healthy, circular alternative to traditional partitioning and cladding materials that can be endlessly recycled.

All the waste we use to make our panels comes from local sources, which eliminates the need to transport materials across long distances. No transport, no CO2 – a production model that, together with our zero-emissions process results in a neutral carbon footprint.

And this is just the beginning. Our goal is to create a globally distributed network of modular production plants that solves the paper industry’s pervasive waste problem by upcycling waste right where it is generated.
