Theme 2025: Biophilic Design
MaterialDistrict Utrecht 2025 embraced the theme of biophilic design—an approach that prioritizes a deep connection between humans and the natural world. In collaboration with co-curator Lianne Bongers from the Biophilic Design Academy, the exhibition space was transformed using natural elements, offering visitors a direct and immersive experience of the value and impact of biophilic design.
“As we face global challenges, we’re witnessing a clear shift from human-centred to life-centred design,” Bongers noted. “This evolution is bringing greater awareness and appreciation for biophilic principles.”
A standout feature of the event was the Biophilic Nest Pavilion—a serene, sensory-rich green haven. Bongers added, “Visitors could truly feel how light, air, greenery, and sustainable materials in organic shapes enhance wellbeing, making our living and working environments healthier, more inviting, and inspiring.
