HONEXT STORIES – Quality Craft Group has chosen HONEXT to design a piece of furniture

Design plays a key role when creating a positive impact. Quality Craft Group has chosen HONEXT to design a piece of furniture to make a difference in the industry employing an innovative material  that does not use earth-depleting virgin building materials.

A totally sustainable piece of furniture, made with HONEXT and off-cuts of solid wood from other furniture. No hardware, and no toxic additives.

To find out more about this project and the company behind it, we interviewed Lenny, Oscar and Sandra.

We would like to know more about Quality Craft Group. You are a company that proposes new methods of doing things. We would like to know about the team behind it and the origin of the company.

Lenny: Quality Craft Group was originally founded by Oscar and myself with the mission of project management as our core business. We serve architects, builders and interior designers and provide a global management of technical development, manufacture and installation of furniture and decoration.

Óscar: A few years ago the professionals involved in a project were contacted individually (electrician, carpenter…) now the way of working has changed a lot, and project managers hire companies that give them the solution as a whole.

Quality Craft Group was driven by the need for a socially responsible company. Our project and our business plan was very socially and economically focused, with equality and equity at its core.

Lenny: The original idea of creating Quality Craft Group and entrepreneurship was that, the way to be able to work ethically and give value.

Sandra was the one who brought the environmental sustainability approach to the project, which we are also passionate about and which is also essentially linked to our vision.

Sandra: As a result of our previous projects, I was delighted when Óscar called me to inform me about the new project they were working on. I thought it was an interesting idea to work with the objective of social equality, respect, caring for the planet, and a commitment to local production.

As part of this project, I am responsible for associating those values, so that it is understood by others.

I have worked in many sectors and I think I bring a mix of knowledge to a project like this one with so much potential and with two profiles like Lenny and Oscar, who are two different but very complementary profiles and both are two people who are very eager to start up this project with such a groundbreaking and exciting essence.

What drives us is to act from the bottom up, to see what you can do in your immediate environment, according to the m2 theory, starting with the basics. Always think about what we can do? Collaborations, help to spread the use of innovative materials, or change processes to reduce impacts, optimize.

How did the project come about and why did you choose HONEXT for the design?

Lenny: Our main task as a company is to globally manage interior decoration projects, as we have already explained. However, we also seek to diversify our services by trying to create, taking time to design and develop individual pieces of furniture that can feed a catalogue of unique pieces.

Óscar: The project was the result of a request from some clients for a unique piece of furniture, made with sustainable materials, and we discovered HONEXT, a totally innovative material. Whenever you are faced with change, you do things differently. To incorporate a new material like HONEXT, you have to make changes in terms of the processes you have to follow, and I think goodwill is vital, to create, to do things differently.

The lifelong struggle of mankind has always been the fear of change. The familiar phrase «I’ve done it this way all my life», because we can change the way we do things.

What has been the biggest challenge in using HONEXT and how did you overcome them to achieve this positive result?

Oscar: HONEXT is a new material which means that processes have to be adapted to new solutions. HONEXT board is 12 mm thick, so we have glued two boards together in some parts to provide extra strength and calibrated where necessary.

Lenny: It was also decided to go with a wooden biscuit system to avoid too much edge mechanisation. We combined the use of HONEXT with solid wood off-cuts for the more structural parts such as the small supporting legs that hold all the weight of the piece of furniture.

The result has been a piece of furniture that physically offers all the functionality of any other piece of furniture made with other materials and with the great added value of using recycled and 100% recyclable materials, healthy and carbon neutral.

It is also a local product and is a piece of furniture designed to be durable and unique.

Besides the great environmental advantage of HONEXT as a fully recycled waste material, what are the positive aspects of HONEXT?

Oscar: We emphasize the lightness of the material because the result has been a lighter piece of furniture than others of the same size made of other materials. This is undoubtedly one of its great advantages.

Lenny: We would point out that the material has no added VOCs. In many countries, furniture buyers consider it essential that it does not release toxins. The material’s health is extremely important.

It is also important to mention the versatility of the material. The finishes that can be given to the material are very interesting and varied. It is a material with infinite possibilities thanks to the finishes that are possible with HONEXT.

How was your HONEXT experience?

Lenny: I believe that HONEXT (as a company) keeps pushing the envelope and innovating by coming up with new solutions that are sustainable. There are more benefits than just the material’s health and environmental qualities. It goes beyond that.

Oscar: I would like to mention the team behind HONEXT who are with you at every stage of the process and the development of the project.

Sandra: I would say, and I believe this goes for all three of us, that teamwork pays off in the end and if people believe in what they do and join together, wonderful things can be achieved. Together we can accomplish wonderful things.
