Preserving Heritage, Embracing Sustainability: The Berwick Street Refurbishment

Berwick Street, renowned for its historic market and cultural significance in London’s Soho, underwent a transformative refurbishment and extension project. Commissioned by Shaftesbury Capital, the goal was to breathe new life into a pair of Grade II listed townhouses that had been altered over the years.

The project embraced the RE:LOW principles, focusing on sustainability, reuse, and creating a connection with the historical context. Internally, non-original finishes were removed, original features were restored, and recycled materials were introduced, reflecting a commitment to preserving the heritage of the buildings.

In each collaboration with Shaftesbury Capital, a key aspect is the commitment to integrating cutting-edge and sustainable materials. Notably, Studioshaw chose to utilize the Honext Board for this distinctive project—an innovative interpretation of Georgian paneling.

CASE STUDY: WHEN CLASSIC MEETS INNOVATION

The objective of this project was to create a contemporary interpretation of Georgian paneling, aiming for a warm and textured wall finish using the innovative HONEXT® Board.

HONEXT® PROCESSING: To achieve the desired aesthetic, the HONEXT® Board underwent a meticulous process. It was first subjected to CNC routing and then coated with a 0% VOC colored wood oil. This particular coating not only served to protect the surface but also ensured the preservation of the board’s natural texture.

Different prototypes were essential to fine-tune the process and achieve the envisioned finish. Notably, precision in CNC routing of the HONEXT® Board was crucial, where carefully adjusting the blade speed was necessary to avoid chamfered edges.

HONEXT® INSTALLATION:

The installation process has been meticulously designed to embody the RE:LOW principles, with a focus on precision, sustainability, and adaptability. In line with the concept of durability, timber split battens were selected for the structure, enabling easy removal of the panelling at the end of use to ensure recyclability.

For low-level panels, a 9mm MDF piece with a 5mm routed shadow gap was utilized, offering both structural support and aesthetic consistency while adapting to the existing uneven walls.
